Rivals clash on weekend MLB slate
Posted on April 24, 2009 | 4:37 AM ET Filed under:Two of the great rivalries in baseball add the latest chapters to their stories this weekend when the New York Yankees hit Boston for a three-game series with the Red Sox, and the St. Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs for three games at Busch Stadium.
After beating the Oakland A's at the new Yankee Stadium on Wednesday 9-7 on a Melky Cabrera home run in the bottom of the 14th New York has won three games in a row, and sits at 9-6 and a game and a half behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.
On the other side of this matchup, after sweeping a day-night doubleheader from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday by scores of 10-1 and 7-3, Boston had won seven games in a row, and was tied with the Yanks for second place in the AL East.
Last year, the Yanks won the season series with the Sox nine games to eight, with the over/unders going 9-7-1. This weekend's series is the first meeting between these two teams this season.
This year, through Wednesday's play, NY and Boston had combined to go 21-8 on the totals.
St. Louis beat the New York Mets on Wednesday 5-2, and was shooting for the sweep of that three-game series Thursday afternoon. Going into Thursday's action, the Cardinals, at 10-5, led the NL Central by a game over the Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Meanwhile, Chicago got shut out Wednesday at home by the Cincinnati Reds, losing 3-0. The two teams were set to play the rubber match of that series Thursday afternoon.
The Cubs took two of three games from the Cards last weekend in Chicago, and all three games went over the totals. Last year, Chicago took the season series from St. Louis nine games to six, with the totals going 5-9-1.
Through Wednesday's play, the Cubs and Cards had combined to go 17-10 on the totals.
